New Plant in Mexico Is Considered by Nissan to Meet Demand in North America

Japanese carmaker Nissan is considering to build new vehicle manufacturing facilities in Mexico and the US to meet demand in both countries.

Mexico's largest automaker has already commenced construction on $2bn facility in central state of Aguascalientes which will boost its manufacturing capacity in the country from 600,000 units per year, to about 800,000 units by the 2013.

Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn said: "We will need capacity in North America and yes, there is a high probability that in the future, we will be announcing a new plant in Mexico or the U.S."

The new facility in North America is being planned by the company as per the sales projections for the next three years.

The vehicles manufactured by the company in Mexico will have 80% domestic content, Nissan said.

Nissan currently has two facilities in Mexico - a plant 85 km south of Mexico City in Cuernavaca which builds small cars and light commercial as well as pickup truck models, while the second plant in Aguascalientes manufactures small cars for the domestic, US and Latin American markets.

Japanese carmaker is also constructing a $1.3bn plant near Rio de Janeiro in Brazil which will have a capacity of 200,000 units following its scheduled opening in 2014.
