Philips is to supply 200,000 of its MasterLED lamps in one of the largest energy saving LED lighting deals in Africa.

The deal, which is to be rolled out in conjunction with Eskom(The South African state-owned utility company),aims to replace 50W halogen bulbs with 7W and 10W LED lamps in lighting schemes in hotels, banks, offices and retail outlets.

Philips estimates that the deal will save up to 58GWh per year, equal to ZAR 41 million(approximately3.4m)and could amount to savings of up to 60,000 tons of CO2.

Andrew Etzinger, senior general manager for Integrated Demand Management at Eskom says,''South Africa is facing an energy-constrained future and it is in Eskom's interest to encourage electricity consumers to reduce consumption where possible.Although we are investing in new power stations to generate enough electricity to meet medium-to long-term demand, improved efficiency is the most practical solution to ensuring our electricity supply will be secure in the short-term''.
