European Union Meat Production Expects to Rise up to 44.9 Million Tonnes Next Year

The European Union meat production is expected to rise up to 44.9 million tonnes next year due to the sustained expansion in poultry meat, European Commission’s annual market outlook report stated.

Named as 'Prospects for EU agricultural markets and income 2014-2024,' the report said that the EU beef production will witness an increase in production after two years of sharp decline.

This boost will be supported by an increase in dairy herd, which offers around two thirds of EU beef production.

However, the report also says that the beef production will again witness a decline later.

"Beef production is expected to return to its historical declining trend soon after, to reach a level of 7.6 million tonnes in 2024, slightly below that of 2014."

The production and consumption of sheep and goat meat will remain stable, while pig meat production will recover after three years of reduced supply.

Meanwhile, the production of poultry meat will "expand significantly" over the predicted period.

"Poultry meat is enjoying several comparative advantages over other meats, including price affordability, convenience, healthier image, lower production costs, shorter rearing time and reduced investment needs," it said.
