German automaker Daimler along with its Romanian subsidiary Star Transmission has commenced the construction of a new Mercedes-Benz assembly plant in Sebes, Romania with an investment of EUR300m.
The company expects to assemble new Mercedes-Benz 9G-TRONIC nine-speed automatic transmission at the plant beginning in 2016.
Currently, the 9G-TRONIC transmission is produced and assembled at the Mercedes-Benz Untertürkheim plant in collaboration with Star Transmission.
Mercedes-Benz Cars, production and supply chain management divisional board member Markus Schafer said that the additional assembly capacities in Sebes supplement the company's production operations at the Mercedes-Benz Untertürkheim plant optimally.
"They also are an important contributing factor in the economics and the flexibility of our international production network of Mercedes-Benz," Schafer added.
"With this set-up we will successfully satisfy the continuing increase in demand for automatic transmissions."
The new expansion is expected to create 500 new jobs in the region.
