Toyota and Cherokee have entered a deal with the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) to use its Qi Wireless Charging system in their vehicles.
As part of the deal, the system will be used in Toyota's Avalon and Prius vehicle models as well as Cherokee 2014 Jeep model starting from 2013.
WPC member company PLDS Marketing & New Technologies director Stefan Graf said the with the increase in number of Qi-enabled devices, consumers want to be able to charge their phones wirelessly everywhere they go, especially in their automobile.
"Within the next year, we are going to see many more automobiles throughout the US, Asia Pacific, and Europe with really exciting Qi wireless charging capabilities," Graf added.
The Jeep Cherokee will have a factory installed Qi wireless charging pad located in its center console as an optional feature, while the Toyota Prius will come with specially designed console tray for the system.
Charger installed by the dealer will jointly use the technology from PLDS and ConvenientPower to charge a smartphone that supports the Qi standard by simply placing the phone on the charger.
