US Eases Restrictions on Canadian Poultry Imports

The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) has eased restrictions on Canadian poultry imports as the industry is recovering from the recent bird flu outbreak.

Imports of poultry and poultry products from Ontario were banned in April after a turkey farm in the province was found to be infected with a strain of bird flu.

The restrictions on live poultry, research birds and hatching eggs will be removed with an immediate effect, Reuters reported.

Since late December, over 48 million turkeys and chickens were killed in the US due to the flu, thereby increasing egg prices in the country.

Last week, the USDA said that the prices of frozen wholesale turkey are expected to increase by 19%, while the wholesale egg prices average $2.38 to $2.52 a dozen in the fourth quarter.

The US farms have started restocking their barns, while the process of rebuilding for large egg producers would take nearly two years.
