Growing Underground Has Opened Recently

Growing Underground, a subterranean farm in old World War II tunnels under the Northern Line at Clapham, London has opened recently.

Backed by crowdfunding, the farm is expected to begin trading in mid-July this year after 18 months of research, development and growing trials.

The farm will initially grow pea shoots, several varieties of radish, mustard, coriander, Red Amaranth, celery, parsley and rocket.

The crops will be grown in a sealed clean-room environment with a ventilation system, advanced lighting and a sustainable irrigation system using less energy.

Growing Underground co-founder Steven Dring said: "Phase one represents more than £750,000 investment in sustainable urban farming for London and we're delighted to be fulfilling our first orders within weeks."

The first produce from the farm will be supplied to County Supplies London, which supplies restaurants via Covent Garden market.

The farm can be further expanded to a neighboring site by creating an invisible urban growing space spread over several acres.
