GMCL Extended The Period of Production at The Oshawa Assembly Plant

General Motors of Canada (GMCL) has extended the period of production on the consolidated line at the Oshawa assembly plant in Ontario, Canada to 2016. The line was due to shut down next summer.

This move is in response to meet projected market demand for its Chevrolet Impala Limited and Chevrolet Equinox.

After this period, the company expects to stop production on the consolidated line of this assembly plant. All scheduling adjustments are subject to market demand.

Unifor Local 222 local union president Ron Svajlenko was quoted by Rueters as saying: "As long as we continue to build vehicles out of that facility, we have the opportunity to remain in the hunt for any kind of long-term additional products that General Motors may need to build."

The Oshawa assembly plant currently employs 3,500 workers runs two assembly lines, which produces 2014 Chevrolet Impala, Chevrolet Camaro, Buick Regal and Cadillac XTS.

Since the launch in 2009, GM invested approximately $1bn in Canadian manufacturing facilities. GMCL markets the full range of Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac vehicles and related services.
