Chinese automaker Build Your Dreams (BYD) has supplied six electric buses to the the provincial government in Friesland in Netherlands.
The automaker has delivered the 12m (40ft) transit bus that are powered by its Iron Phosphate batteries, which can travel a distance of over 250Km (155miles) per charge.
Friesland Provincial executive director Johannes Kramer said with the new buses the province will soon have a fully-electrified public transportation service.
"This is good for Schiermonnikoog, good for tourism, and great for the environment!," Kramer said.
According to the company, the vehicles can accommodate 60-70 passengers and provide service all day without needing another charge.
BYD has also signed a 15 year maintenance contract to support the buses in service.
BYD Europe managing director Isbrand Ho said the company is delighted to have won this first tender to supply the vehicles.
"They are the first but certainly not the last, BYD electric buses to go into passenger carrying service in Europe and we anticipate further significant orders following the successful trials programs we have undertaken in many locations," Ho added.
Features of the electric buses include the specially designed wheel-hub motor and the electronically controlled air suspension, along with the front windscreen, which occupies two-thirds of the total frontal area.
