Fiber-based products manufacturer Domtar is set to shut down one pulp machine, A-Line' at its Kamloops, British Columbia facility in Canada permanently, by the end of March 2013.
According to the company, the decision will limit the company's annual pulp production by about 120,000 air-dried metric tons of sawdust softwood pulp.
Domtar Pulp and Paper Manufacturing senior vice-president Mike Edwards said the company decided to rationalize the pulp production capacity owing to prevailing economic conditions in the global pulp markets and the deteriorated competitiveness of the small pulp manufacturing line.
"We will focus our energy and resources on optimizing the larger, more competitive, 'B' pulp manufacturing line which will continue to operate," Edwards said.
With a capacity of about 350,000 air-dried metric tons of softwood kraft pulp annual, the Kamloops pulp operation will continue to operate its remaining pulp manufacturing line.
Domtar designs, manufactures, markets and distributes various fiber-based products including specialty and packaging papers, communication papers, among others.
