Shanghai OnStar has launched the new remote ignition block (RIB) service that provides an additional protection for vehicles against theft.
OnStar said that if the vehicle is stolen the customer needs to first report the theft to the police and upon getting confirmation from the police, the company will remotely block the stolen car's engine from starting.
The vehicle will not be able to be restarted until the company deactivates RIB service.
RIB, which is an extension and upgrade of the existing stolen vehicle location (SVL) service, provides safety mechanism for customers to allow them to recover their stolen vehicles quickly and safely, while also providing assistance to cars owner and police.
Shanghai OnStar managing director Diane Jurgens said that RIB is yet another modernization to ensure vehicle and property safety," Jurgens said.
"It demonstrates our commitment to public security and to further improving the interconnected and smart driving experience."
