The US Department of Agriculture Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has issued a public notification regarding a a recall issued by the Chilean Ministry of Health for chicken products as they may be contaminated with Dioxin.
This development comes after after the agency received an official notification from the government of Chile over the positive result for dioxin.
All the products produced at San Vicente establishment, a Chilean establishment 0608, between 29 May 2013 to 12 June 2013 are believed to be adulterated and should be discarded, the agency said.
FSIS ordered importers to hold the implicated product, which was presented for re-inspection. The agency has determined that 188,522 pounds of chicken may be affected and 126,082 pounds is currently being held.
Currently, it is investigating the distribution of the remaining 62,440 pounds and verifying if additional shipments are involved.
FSIS may expand the notification and will take appropriate action after analyzing updated information from the government of Chile.
Dioxins are a group of compounds that occur naturally during forest fires, as well as from industrial emissions and burning trash. Very high doses of dioxin for a prolonged period could lead to adverse health effects.
