German carmaker Audi has been reported to have started the process of developing its new A7 vehicle that will be powered by a fuel cell.

The fuel cell-equipped Audi A7 is expected to be a part of the company's new tron range of technologies and is scheduled to be trialed at the end of August 2013.

An electro-chemical reaction between a fuel, hydrogen, and oxygen is used by the fuel cells to generate electricity and heat to give out water as the bi-product.

The vehicle uses the electricity produced to charge a battery or to directly drive electric motors for propulsion, whereas the waste heat can used for thermal systems or to produce electricity generation using thermocouples.

In 2009, Audi had tested its Q5 Hybrid Fuel Cell that used two high-pressure cylinders of hydrogen to generate fuel-cell power for the vehicle's twin electric motors.
