Cargill, a US-based agribusiness company, has inaugurated a $250m poultry operation in Lai’an, Anhui province, China, as part of its efforts to support the modernization of agriculture and food safety in the country.
The project includes every stage of the poultry supply chain, including chicken breeding, raising, feed production, hatching, slaughtering and processing.
The facility is capable of processing about 65 million chickens as well as 176,000 tons of poultry products per year.
Cargill's food safety systems include Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) programs supported by programs such as sanitation for processing equipment, proper personal hygiene, pest control, maintenance, product labeling and traceability.
Cargill Animal Protein China president Chris Langholz said, "We will utilize our global safety standards in food, employee safety and environmental management in China at the same levels we operate our business anywhere else in the world."
"We believe that applying our global expertise to local circumstances will help the industry and provide more confidence for Chinese consumers. We wish to thrive together with China and help ensure the sustainable growth of China's poultry industry," Langholz added.
The project is expected to create about 4,000 new jobs in the coming years, boosting the farmer incomes.
