The GOVT. of Canada Is Continuing Efforts to Further Strengthen Food Safety in The Country

The Government of Canada is continuing its efforts to further strengthen food safety in the country, and has started implementing its actions to address auditor general recommendations.

Minister of Health Rona Ambrose has highlighted recent actions taken by the Harper government to enhance food safety.

Since October, the government has taken several actions, including plans to introduce stiffer penalties for businesses that fail to respect federal meat safety requirements, developed enhanced tools for communicating with the public, expanded FoodNet Canada to a third surveillance site and launched the Healthy and Safe Food for Canadians Framework.

Ambrose said, "Our Government is committed to ensuring that Canadian families have confidence in the food they buy and eat.

"As confirmed by the Auditor General, our food recall system effectively removes unsafe food from the marketplace and quickly warns consumers."

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) accepted all the recommendations made in the Auditor General's recent report and work is well underway to address them.

The agency has completed one of the Auditor General's 11 recommendations, better monitoring of corrective action requests.

Ambrose added, "We have significantly strengthened the food safety system, and we'll continue to take action to protect consumers."
