Canadian establishment Diwa Products is voluntarily recalling Diwa brand Grated Coconut as it may have been contaminated with Salmonella, according to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA).
The product associated with the recall is 16oz Diwa Grated Coconut bearing UPC code 6 28838 52049 3, and 40 x 16oz case of Diwa Grated Coconut with product code SPO313.
This recalled product, which is from Philippines, was sold frozen across Canada.
The CFIA is monitoring the effectiveness of the recall, which has been classified as Class 2 health hazard.
Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in people with weakened immune systems and can result in fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.
In some cases, infection with Salmonella can cause the organism getting into the bloodstream and result in severe illnesses such as arterial infections, endocarditis and arthritis.
