Hain Daniels, a subsidiary of US-based Hain Celestial group, has announced that it will shut down a fruit packaging plant in Luton, UK, following a review of its facilities.
The company, which makes Hartley’s and Robertson’s jam and Gales Honey, plans to close the plant by the end of this year.
The movecould see more than 200 of its employees losing their.
The company operates nine manufacturing facilities in the UK, including Luton facility, employing more than 2,500 people.
Hain Danielswas quoted by Lutontoday.co.uk as stating: “Following the acquisition of Orchard House Foods by The Hain Daniels Group in December 2015, a detailed review of the fruit manufacturing facilities is currently being undertaken.
“Regrettably, Hain Daniels has announced its proposal to close the facility in Luton at the end of 2016, which coincides with the end of the lease on the facility.
“During the collective 45-day consultation period, the company will be discussing potential alternative opportunities for colleagues within the group.”
Established in 1985 by Wellness Foods,Orchard House Foods was a supplier of fruit desserts, juices and ingredients in the UK.
Hain Celestial Group expectedthe acquisition to result in around $60-65m in net sales and a slight improvement in earnings.
Last year, Hain Celestialalso made significant investment in Chopt Creative Salad Company in partnership with Catterton, a consumer-focused private equity firm.
The investment was aimed at combining the strengths of Hain Celestial's innovation and its presence in natural foods with that of Chopt salads and craveable dressings.
