Audi has deployed robots named ‘Ray’ at its plant in Ingolstadt, Germany that are capable of independently transporting cars from production to an interim storage area.
Presently, the company has introduced two robots that are part of Audi's testing systems for the intelligent factory of the future.
Ray is capable of moving freely, and it features a six meters long and three meters wide frame with sensors to determine the position and dimensions of a car.
It adjusts according to the dimension of the car, and Audi uses it to sort the models into position according to their shipping destinations, making it easier for logistics employees to load the vehicles onto railway wagons.
Audi is presently examining to use of such robots in more applications.
Audi Management Board member Prof. Dr. Hubert Waltl said: "The autonomous transport of our automobiles could allow us to eliminate long walking distances for our employees and to improve the ergonomics of their work.
"Systems like this also have the potential to significantly increase the efficiency of our processes."
