GM Has Reportedly Rejected a Merger Offer From FIAT Chrysler

The General Motors (GM) has reportedly rejected a merger offer from Fiat Chrysler, which could have created a giant automotive company.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles CEO Sergio Marchionne had sent an email to GM counterpart Mary Barra in March, explaining how such move would help cut costs and make the combined entity an automotive behemoth.

However, such a proposition eventually failed to evoke any interest from any of the GM executives and the request for a meeting by Fiat Chrysler met with a refusal, the New York Times reported.

Marchionne had earlier played key role in the merger of Chrysler with Italian automobile manufacturer Fiat.

The merger between Fiat and Chrysler helped the combined entity to emerge as world's No. 7 automaker. The merged entity 'FCA' had posted two-fold rise in its sales since 2009.

The FCA managed to sell only 4.6 million cars and trucks across the world in 2014, about 50% of what was registered by its rival, such as, GM and Volkswagen.

In the April-end, Marchionne also repeated his call to automakers to merge, during a routine analyst conference call.
