Japanese automaker Toyota Motor has unveiled the first commercial version of the zero-emission hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle (FCV), which is scheduled for the debut at the 2014 Aspen Ideas Festival in the US.
The new FCV Concept vehicle will accommodate four occupants, while offering a transit range of about 3miles in single filling.
Equipped with Toyota's lightweight fuel-cell stack with a power density of 3kW per liter and two 70MPa high-pressure hydrogen tanks, the vehicle system also features Toyota's high-efficiency boost converter.
Toyota Motor Sales US automotive operations senior vice president Bob Carter said the vehicle produces sufficient electrical power to spin the electric motor for about 300 miles on a single fill-up which takes three to five minutes.
"This is going to be a very special vehicle," Carter added.
"And we believe we can bring it in at a very reasonable price for a lot of people.
"The success of fuel cell technology will depend less on the genius of the car, than on the ownership experience."
Toyota has announced that the FCV will be made available in Japan by April 2015, which will be followed by the launch across Europe and the state of California in summer 2015.
In Japan, the vehicle will be available for about $68,000.
