Nestlé Europe has outlined plans to cut water usage by 40% across its manufacturing sites by the end of this decade.
The company had already reduced water usage by 36% between 2004 and 2010, after it made certain changes to production levels.
Nestlé Europe executive vice president Laurent Freixe said that while water scarcity tends to be an issue that is more related to the South, it is highly relevant in Europe as well.
"We will meet these targets by combining training, changing behavior, quick wins and knock-on investments," Freixe added.
The company's La Penilla facility in Spain has managed to lower water use per ton of product by around two-third in less than a year, while its Girvan factory in UK intends to recycle 0.5 million liters of water from milk used in production of chocolate products.
By the end of 2015, Nestlé aims to achieve 40% reduction in overall water withdrawals per ton of product. It plans to review water resources to prioritize investments.
