South Korean electronics group LG Chem's US subsidiary, LG Chem Michigan (LGCMI) will start production of automotive lithium-ion battery cells at its Holland, Michigan facility in July 2013.
The company has started the testing runs at the facility and is waiting for the production part approval process (PPAP) and gained customer approval.
According to the company, the start of the production is expected to position it for electric vehicle (EV) business in the US and to compete for energy storage systems (ESS) business.
LGCMI president Sain Park said, "Our plan is to operate the Michigan plant as a strategic location to meet customer needs, secure future orders and compete aggressively in the ESS battery market."
The company will produce lithium-ion batteries for the Chevrolet Volt and plans to increase the production capacity based on the EV market and reception of more contracts.
Earlier, the company had planned to install five assembly lines at the Holland facility and has established three lines, while it is planning to complete the installation of other two lines by September 2015.
