Opel Has Announced a 1.6L CDTI ECOTEC Four-Cylinder Turbo-Diesel Engine to Replace Other

German carmaker Opel has unveiled a 1.6L CDTI ECOTEC four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine to replace the 1.7L engines that are presently used.

The engine features closed-loop combustion control and an aluminum block and will produce 136hp and 320Nm of torque while using 10% less fuel compared to the 2Ldiesel engines.

Manufacture of the engine is scheduled to start by spring of 2013, at the flex plant in Szentgotthard in Hungary, Europe.

Opel management board deputy chairman Dr. Thomas Sedran said that their new 1.6L diesel will set benchmarks for refinement, performance and environmental compatibility.

"The new 1.6-liter diesel and its innovative engine control unit have been entirely developed in-house by a global team of engineers in Turin, Ruesselsheim and the USA," Sedran added.

The company plans to launch 23 new models and 13 new powertrains by 2016 including the three generations of gasoline and diesel engines.
