German automobile manufacturer Daimler has unveiled the new 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class saloon in Hamburg.
The new saloon model will be offered in two hybrid versions, a petrol and a diesel variant, including S 400 HYBRID, S 300 BlueTEC HYBRID, S 500 and S 350 BlueTEC respectively, which are claimed to offer up to 20% lower fuel consumption over the predecessor model.
The S 400 HYBRID version is powered by a V6 petrol engine and a hybrid module that collectively generate an output of 245kW and 370Nm of torque, while HYBRID sprints from 0-100km/h in 6.8 seconds and achieve a top speed of 250km/h.
Mercedes-Benz's S 300 BlueTEC HYBRID variant is powered by a 2.2-litre four-cylinder diesel engine and hybrid module, which offers a combined fuel consumption of 4.4L per 100km.
The petrol variant S 500 is powered by a 4663cc V8 biturbo engine that produces 455hp output and sprints from 0-100km/h in 4.8 seconds, while achieving a top speed of 250km/h.
The diesel variant S 350 BlueTEC is powered by a 2987cc V6 engine that delivers an output of 258hp and a torque of 620Nm, while accelerating from 0-100km/h in 6.8sec.
All the new S-Class engines are mated to a 7G-TRONIC PLUS automatic transmission with DIRECT SELECT lever that feature a new torque converter with reduced slip, an ECO shift mode, as well as an auxiliary oil pump to maintain the operating pressure during automatic stops.
The new saloon features THERMOTRONIC automatic climate control, active perfuming system, PRE-SAFE Brake, PRE-SAFE PLUS and PRE-SAFE Impulse.
Safety features include DISTRONIC PLUS with Steering Assist and Stop&Go Pilot, Brake Assist system BAS PLUS with Cross-Traffic Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist, Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus and Attention Assist.
Additionally, Daimler is planning to introduce the S 500 Plug-In HYBRID, which is claimed to be the first model in S-Class with fuel consumption lower than four litres per 100km.
