South Korean carmaker Hyundai Motor is looking to launch Sonata plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) sometime between October and November this year to seize the driver’s seat in the eco-friendly domain in the country.
"We plan to unveil the Sonata PHEV during the third quarter so as not to miss the opportunity to get a head start in the domestic eco-friendly market," a Hyundai Motor official told South Korean news agency Yonhap.
PHEV cars can be powered by both internal combustion engine and battery unit, which can be charged externally through an electric plug. They have been regarded miles ahead of hybrid cars for faring better with electricity and covering longer distances.
However, recharging such vehicles demands an infrastructure that would be instrumental towards determining the popularity of these eco-friendly cars.
The launch of Sonata PHEV will confirm Hyundai's entry in the fray wherein other carmakers are preoccupied with introducing their eco-friendly versions.
While Audi has announced its foray after July this year, GM Korea and Volkswagen are likely to follow suit next year.
The South Korean government is considering subsidies to pitch for the PHEVs in its stride to promote vehicles that support economical fuel consumption.
However, price will remain the issue as one has to shell out more to own the cars as against their traditional counterparts.
