UK-based mining giant Anglo American Corporation has announced its production results for the fourth quarter ended on December 31, 2012.
In the given quarter, the iron ore production from Kumba Iron Ore decreased by 19 percent year on year to 9 million mt due to a strike at Sishen mine during the quarter and low attendance in the mining section following the strike action.
On the other hand, Kolomela mine in South Africa has exceeded its designed monthly capacity since July 2012 and reached record levels in the fourth quarter. The mine produced 2.8 million mt for the quarter and is on track to achieve its designed capacity of 9 million mt per year in 2013.
In the fourth quarter, metallurgical coal production increased by 13 percent to 4.6 million mt, while nickel production decreased by 25 percent on year-on-year basis to 7,400 mt owing to the cessation of production at Loma de Níquel in Venezuela, which was partly offset by an increased contribution from Barro Alto.
