According to a report from Energy Research Associates Wood Mackenzie, China's coal consumption is expected to double in 2030, reaching 7 billion tons per year, though China has taken measures to control coal consumption.
The report says China is making policies to lower dependencies on coal and to reduce the pollution. But it cann't curb coal demand.
The data from Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency shows that China's greenhouse gas emissions takes 25% of the world's total emissions.
Scientists believe that it's hard to achieve the goal of keeping the temperature growth below 2 centigrade if China's coal consumption double. The goal helps to avoid extensive drought, sea level rise and other disastrous storms.
The report says in the next 17 years, China is likely to reduce the electricity consumption of per GDP unit by half. But to less-developed Middle-West area, economic growth means the increase of energy.
China is the world's largest coal import country and annual imports reach 1900 million tons.
Despite the increase of coal consumption, Durbin says coal will play a less important role in China's electricity.
