The LCA model enables the companies to track their products from raw material through to consumer use and disposal, and detects areas of major environmental impacts and then help reduce those impacts.
"To achieve the ultimate goal of end-to-end recycling, we cannot work alone," Unilever said in a statement. "It is essential that all facets of the value chain – material suppliers, printers, end-users and recyclers – collaborate together to establish a clear and transparent recycling stream globally.
"It is equally important that we have the necessary information available to understand the environmental impacts of the materials we are using. This helps us immensely in our material selection process."
The two firms will include label dispensing operations from Unilever's own packaging unit into the LCA model.
