Abu Dhabi Expects The AED 16.52 Billion Phase II of Its Smelter to Be Complete by The Q1

Gulf News reported that Abu Dhabi based Emirates Aluminium Company expects the AED 16.52 billion Phase II of its smelter to be complete by the Q1 of 2014 when it will raise production up to the capacity levels of 1.3 million tonnes.

Mr Saeed Al Mazroui CEO of EMAL said that “The demand on our product is high, but we won’t increase our production next year since we’ve reached our maximum production capacity two months ago. The smelter reached its production capacity of 800,000 tonnes in October. When phase two is completed by end of Q1 2014 we’ll be able to increase our production to about 1.3 million tonnes.”

Last year, Emal secured approval from its board for the USD 4.5 billion expansion that will almost double the aluminium smelter’s annual capacity to 1.3 million tonnes by 2014.

Mr Al Mazroui said that Emal, JV between Abu Dhabi’s Mubadala and Dubai Aluminium, is currently supplying over 200 customers globally and has no problems in fulfilling its obligations towards the market in 2013. The smelter has produced 1.5 million metric tonnes of the metal since it started operations in December 2009.
