Domestic Sales of Textiles Decline of 6.6 Percent Year-on-Year in April 2014

Domestic sales of textiles and clothing from Spain saw a decline of 6.6 percent year-on-year, during the month of April 2014, said president of Business Association of Textile Trade and Accessories (ACOTEX) Borja Oria during a recent meeting of leading textile industry representatives held in Madrid.

According to a statement issued by ACOTEX, Mr. Oria said that although the domestic sales for the month of April show a decrease, the year 2014 has seen a recovery in the Spanish textiles and clothing sector, and the industry is expected to close this year positively.

The key to recovery of both the textiles and clothing sector remains to be consumer confidence and industry representatives can breathe a sigh of relief as the revival trend is significantly better than the second half of 2013, he added.

At the meeting, the ACOTEX official also asked the Government to advocate boosting tourism in the country in order to increase sales of Spanish apparel and textiles.

The objective of the meeting, titled ‘Cycle 2014: The year of Recovery’, was to discuss the current scenario of the Spanish textile and apparel sector, and create strategies to revive the industry.

The meeting was organized by Spanish online fashion news portal modaes.es along with the support of ACOTEX, and brought together several textile and clothing industry representatives under the same roof, including CEO of Cortefiel Group Ignacio Sierra, CEO of Modania Miguel Angel Gomez Garcia, Spanish apparel brand El Ganso co-founder Clemente Sebrian and many others.
