Explanation:

The national total grain output combined the total outputs of summer grains, early rice, and autumn grains production in 31 provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities).

1. Survey Methods

The statistics of grain output adopts a combined statistical method, i.e, sample survey on major varieties, and comprehensive statistics on small species. The objects of the survey included the agricultural production households and agricultural holdings. The field work was conducted by the Survey Offices of the NBS separately by three harvesting seasons, i.e., summer grains, early rice and autumn grains.

The agricultural production households were the objects of sample survey, the major grain varieties in the survey included rice, wheat and corn. The survey was conducted by selecting representative villager groups, households and land segments, while taking a province as the population. Acreage survey refers to the total sown area of all crops within the sample area at surveying time point, grain yield per unit area survey was measured using real cutting and weighting method, therefore, the actual sown area and yield per unit area of major grain varieties can be estimated. The output data can be obtained by multiplying the two results. The gain output produced by agricultural production households accounted for more than 95 percent to national total.

In 2012, the NBS formally conducted Land Sampling Survey on Agricultural Crops (taking the land segments of agricultural crops as the survey objects, rather than the agricultural production housholds) in Liaoning, Jilin, Jiangsu, Henan and Hubei, the grain output of these 5 provinces were obtained from this kind of survey.

2.Survey Sample

The current sample survey of grain output was conducted in 848 counties national wide.8890 villager groups and 480 thousand households were selected in the sown area survey. 8890 villager groups and 60 thousand land segments were selected in the yield of per unit area survey on major grain varieties, like rice, wheat and corn. The field work was conducted by staff members and assistant interviewers of survey offices at county level.

3.Real Cutting and Weighting Method

The survey of main varieties of grain yield per unit area was conducted using real cutting and weighting method, based on the survey samples of grain sown area. In accordance with "The Program on Sample Survey of Agricultural Output", before harvesting of varieties of grains, the staff members of survey offices at county level go to the selected village, estimate the output of every piece of land growing grains and sorting them, then select certain amount of land plots. During the harvest period, interviewers or assistant interviewers at grassroots estimate the yield of per unit area of the selected plot by cutting, threshing, drying, testing water impurity, weighting, and estimating the losses during the whole process. The Survey Offices at provincial level of the NBS estimate the average yield per unit area of the province (autonomous regions, municipalities) according to yields of selected plots.
