Big Red Tomato Packers Issues Recall Over Salmonella

Big Red Tomato Packers LLC of Fort Pierce, FL, is voluntarily issuing a voluntary, limited recall of 790 boxes of fresh tomatoes of lot 1106, sold in 20- and 25-pound units, because they may be contaminated with Salmonella.

Tomatoes from the lot were distributed to a limited number of receivers in Florida, North Carolina, Michigan, Minnesota, Pennsylvania and Tennessee. All receivers of the lot have been notified.

The potential for contamination was discovered as the result of a routine random lot sample taken on Jan. 28, 2014.

No illnesses have been attributed to the products. However, due to the time involved in tracing an illness back to a specific food item, it is impossible to say whether or not any illnesses have occurred.

The company said it is currently reviewing all policies and procedures associated with food safety to minimize any future occurrence.

Any product remaining in the market channels should be disposed of immediately.
