Coal exports from the Port Waratah Coal Services (PWCS) terminals based at Port of Newcastle in New South Wales, Australia, totaled 10.15 million mt in January this year, rising by 2.9 percent compared to December 2012, according to the company's announcement. 19 percent of the total coal handled at the terminals was coking coal.
In the previous year, coking coal exports constituted 14 percent of total coal exports of 105.9 million mt from PWCS.
According to the released information, Japan was the largest export destination for coal shipments from PWCS in January, accounting for 51 percent of total shipments, while coal exports to China made up 18 percent of the total.
