The Dow Jones Average Slid Friday

THE Dow Jones average slid Friday, capping a quarter marked by heightened volatility as investors positioned themselves for an era of less Federal Reserve support for financial markets.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 114.89 points, or 0.8 per cent, at 14,909.60. Nevertheless, the blue-chip rose 2.3 per cent for the quarter and logged its best performance for the first half of a year since 1999. Stocks opened the year with virtually uninterrupted gains, before Fed officials' comments in May and June about a tapering of stimulus measures brought choppy trading and a pause for the rally.
