The Share of Textiles, Apparel and Footwear in Total Exports From Romania Has Fallen

The share of textiles, apparel and footwear in total exports from Romania has fallen from about one-third in 2000 to about 10 percent in 2013, although the value of exports has risen from €3.6 billion to €5.1 billion during the same period, according to the National Statistical Institute (INS).

In 2000, the exports of textile, clothing and footwear from Romania were €3.583 billion, which was 1.8 percent of the total €11.273 billion worth of goods exported by the European country in that year.

In 2004, Romania’s textile, garment and footwear exports stood at €5.461 billion, which declined to €4.782 billion in 2008 and again increased to €5.093 million in 2013, as per the statistics. The figure for overall exports from Romania was €18.935 billion in 2004, €33.725 billion in 2008 and €49.564 billion in 2013. Thus, the share of textiles, apparel and footwear segment in Romania’s total exports dropped from 31.8 percent in 2000 to 10.3 percent in 2013.

On the import side, the share of textile, garment and footwear imports by Romania, compared to the country’s overall imports dropped from 18 percent in 2000 to 7.7 percent in 2013, although its value increased 1.7 fold during the period.

In 2000, Romania imported textiles, apparel and footwear worth €2.369 billion, which increased to €3.361 billion in 2004, €3.717 billion in 2008 and then to €4.086 billion in 2013.
