Labels and Pos Firm Invested £3m in Heidelberg Printing Press and Platemaking System

Labels and Pos Firm Print-Leeds Unveils £3m Investment

The business, which bought S&C Labels in Huddersfield earlier in the year, is planning to centralise its operations in Leeds and increase its floorspace from 1,000sqm to around 1,800sqm.

Alongside the move, which will happen over the Christmas break, the firm is also investing nearly £3m in a new Heidelberg printing press and platemaking system.

The new press, a Speedmaster CX 102-7+L, will be primarily used for printing wet-glue labels.

However, it will also handle some of the company’s printing onto plastics, which is primarily point of sale material such as wobblers and shelf strips.

Print-Leeds’ average run for labels is reported to be 20,000 sheets, and its primary client base is in the beer, water and food sectors. Its printing onto plastics, meanwhile, averages runs of just 1,000 and often includes lenticular work.

While the business has previously used primarily the smaller B2 press size, the new B1 press, which will be delivered at the end of November, will give it the option to handle larger printed sheets where necessary.

Print-Leeds managing director Rod Fisher said that one crucial aspect of the line’s set-up is the inclusion of a feature called Inpress Control, which automatically measures and controls color and register during the print run.

He said: “On older presses you can see fluctuations in quality and I have certainly seen variations across labels on supermarket shelves.

“We want perfect and predictable results. Customers will undoubtedly benefit from superior quality as a result of this investment.”

The business, which has turnover of around £5m and some 40 staff, is also buying a Suprasetter 105 CTP platemaking system.
