US-based automobile manufacturer Ford Motor will expand the production of the EcoBoost engine at its Cologne engine manufacturing plant in Germany.

The company will increase the production of the 1L EcoBoost by two times to over 1,000 engines per day from mid-August 2013 in order to meet the increasing demand.

Designed at Ford's research and development centers at Aachen and Merkenich in Germany, and Dunton in the UK, the engine is currently manufactured at its plants in Cologne and Craiova, Romania.

Currently, the manufacturer uses the engine to power small cars including Fiesta and B-MAX and compact vehicles including Focus, C-MAX and Grand C-MAX, while it is als planning to use the engines in larger cars including the new Ford Mondeo

By 2015, Ford Europe plans to triple the annual production of vehicles powered by the EcoBoost petrol engines to about 480,000 units from 141,000 vehicles in 2011, while the company expects that over 300,000 of the vehicles will be equipped with the 1L EcoBoost engine.

During the first quarter of 2013, the engine held 42% of orders in B-MAX, 30% in Focus and 24% in Fiesta across Ford's traditional European markets.
