The bedding industry turned in a solid performance in August, with units increasing by 3.5% and the dollar value of bedding shipments rising a healthy 6.9%. The average unit price rose 3.3%, to $212.01.
Those figures from the August Bedding Barometer report issued by the International Sleep Products Assn. reflect the performance of 15 bedding producers that account for a majority of U.S. bedding shipments.
For the first eight months of the year, units were up 1.5% and the dollar value of bedding shipments was up 2.0%. The average unit price is up just 0.5%, to $214.44, ISPA said.
The three-month moving average, covering the period from June through August, has units up 3.7% and the dollar value of bedding shipments up 5.6%. The average unit price is up 1.8%, to $215.24.
Breakdowns on the performance of innerspring and specialty sleep mattresses will be released in the September Bedding Barometer report.
The 15 companies contributing to the Bedding Barometer reports accounted for 70% of total bedding units last year and 78.5% of the value of wholesale bedding shipments. But ISPA cautions that the performance of the companies in the monthly reports does not necessarily reflect the performance of the entire bedding industry because of market share or distribution changes, among other factors.
