MK Lu, chairman of Taiwan-based solar wafer maker Sino-American Silicon (SAS), has indicated the firm was still able to generate profits in 2011 and expects the solar market to warm up in 2012. The price of polysilicon has been increasing towards US$30/kg. The price of solar wafer has been moving between US$1.25-1.30/unit, above production costs, prompting Lu to predict the industry to begin generating profits by May or June 2012. Lu noted that SAS was affected by the fluctuations in the solar and LED sapphire market. However, the firm has been supported by small- and medium-size semiconductor applications, allowing it to generate profits in 2011. Lu believes the market will warm up in second- and third-quarter 2012 as the debt crisis in Europe will likely be solved. Source: www.digitimes.com
