Bedding's Units Jumping 4.9% and The Dollar of Bedding Shipments Increasing 5.9% in July

The bedding industry recorded solid gains in July, with units jumping 4.9% and the wholesale dollar value of bedding shipments increasing 5.9%.

For the first seven months of the year, the industry solidified the tenuous gains it recorded at the year's halfway point. Units are up 1.2% through July, while the dollar value of bedding shipments is up 1.3%.

Units and dollars were both up just 0.5% through June.

The figures are from the monthly Bedding Barometer reports issued by the International Sleep Products Assn., which reflect the performance of 15 bedding producers accounting for a majority of bedding shipments.

The July report revealed that the average unit price for July was up just 0.9%, to $213.33. For the first seven months of the year, the average unit price is up 0.1%, to $214.84.

ISPA also released the three-month moving average, which puts units up 2.9% for the May-July period, with the dollar value of bedding shipments in that period increasing 3.9%. The average unit price in that period is up 0.9%, to $217.78.

The 15 companies submitting figures to ISPA for the Bedding Barometer reports last year accounted for 70% of total units and 78.5% of the dollar value of industry shipments, ISPA said.

It notes that the figures in the Bedding Barometer reports may not necessarily reflect the performance of the entire industry due to market share and distribution shifts, and other factors.

The monthly reports are closely followed by industry observers and are viewed by industry observers as an indicator of overall industry performance.
