Creating domestic demand is more important than funding international projects, says Giga Solar chairman Nuying Huang,Taipei;Jackie Chang,DIGITIMES[Monday 8 October 2012]The Taiwan government should create domestic demand first instead of providing funds to finance international projects, according to Chi-jen Chen, chairman of Taiwan-based conductive paste maker Giga Solar.Taiwan currently ranks number two in solar cell production, and therefore Taiwan should invest in more than 100MW of solar projects per year, said Chen.
Giga Solar recently completed a 1.2MW solar PV system in Tainan,southern Taiwan.The total cost,excluding land cost,was NT$60-70 million(US$2-2.39 mililon)with 20%paid by Giga Solar and 80%from bank loans.
Chen said that to build a solar power-generation plant in Taiwan is quite difficult and suggested that Taiwan's government focus on creating domestic demand.International projects have high risks that banks are unlikely to invest heavily, added Chen. One of Taiwan's three existing nuclear power plants is set to retire in 2015,and it currently generates 1GW of electricity,Chen said, adding that solar power can make up that amount after the nuclear plant stops running.
