For want of the right label, ConAgra Foods is recalling 54,673 pounds – about 27 tons – of chicken noodle soup products made in one day at its facility in Milton, PA.
A "Healthy Choice Chicken with Rice" soup label, which does not list wheat and egg as known allergens, was wrapped around the microwave bowls of the product on Dec. 16, 2013, and then shipped to retailers in the United States, the Dominican Republic, Jamaica and Puerto Rico.
Misbranding and undeclared allergens were both listed as reasons for the recall, which ConAgra announced though the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS).
Here's the product information for the recall: 14-oz. microwave bowls of "Healthy Choice Chicken with Rice" soup bearing the establishment number "P-770" inside the USDA Mark of Inspection and the Best By date of "JUN092015" stamped on the bottom of the bowl.
ConAgra first learned of the problem from consumers. It's too early to know if anyone experienced adverse reactions due to consumption of the misbranded chicken noodle soup.
FSIS routinely conducts recall effectiveness checks to ensure that steps are taken to make certain that the product is no longer available to consumers. Look for the retail distribution list(s) on this FSIS website.
