Apple is reportedly the latest company to ditch Amazon and adopt Google for its cloud computing needs.
Amazon Web Services and Microsoft's Azure are the two biggest cloud computing platforms in the world, and are where the vast majority of businesses place their online operations. However, in recent years, Google has looked to creep its way up from a distant third place.
It may have just snagged its biggest client yet in Apple. The Financial Times is reporting that Apple has moved a portion of its iCloud services to Google Cloud.
Apple apparently uses both Amazon's and Microsoft's cloud services, and also has its own data centres. However, in adding Google to that mix, it has reportedly reduced its reliance on Amazon to a significant degree.
Sources of CRN's claim that Apple is spending between $400 million and $600 million on Google Cloud Platform - a significant amount of money.
It seems none of the cloud service providers should revel in Apple's support, however. All signs point to Apple becoming self-reliant in the online sphere at some point in the future, and ditching all three of its rivals in the process.
Apple has previously announced that it is building three new data centres around the world, the first of which will open some time this year.
According to Recode's sources, Apple has a specific project under way to break away from its cloud dependence. It's called 'McQueen,' seemingly in reference to the actor and his famous role in The Great Escape.
Still, Google will be happy with its latest high profile capture, for however long it lasts. Just last month it emerged that Amazon Web Services customer Spotify had moved some of its in-house infrastructure to Google Cloud Platform, signalling Google's aggressive intentions in the field.
