Samsung Expects a Rise in Operating Profit of 8.7 Trillion Won

Samsung expects a rise in operating profit of 8.7 trillion won (£5.05bn) in the first quarter of 2013, a 53 per cent year-on-year increase.

In the first quarter of 2012, the South Korean firm made an operating profit of 5.7tn (£3.3bn), and as the popularity of Samsung's Galaxy smartphones increased the firm continued to make record profits in each quarter.

In the final quarter of 2012, the company made 8.8trn won (£5.1bn), as the firm replaced Apple as number one in global smartphone sales and overall mobile phone sales. In that quarter, it shifted a total of 384.6 million handsets of which 53.5 per cent were smartphones.

Last month, the company unveiled its latest smartphone, the Galaxy S4, with a NFC chip compatible with Google Wallet, along with the ability to control aspects of the phone by eye or by hovering a finger over it.

"Samsung Smart Pause enables you to control the screen by where you look. When you are watching a video, the video pauses when you look away then it starts right up again when you are back," a Samsung spokesperson said at the launch in New York, adding that Samsung Smart Scroll "recognises your face looking at the screen and movement of your wrist and then scrolls the pages up or down accordingly".

The higher specs of the S4 compared to the Apple iPhone 5 - with higher megapixel cameras, a higher resolution screen and a faster processor - have encouraged analysts to suggest that the phone will be a serious competitor to Apple's latest device, and therefore enable Samsung to continue posting strong profits in the coming quarters.

The official release date for the S4 is 26 April, the same date that Samsung will release its final quarterly results.
