Taiwan-based solar firms have been experiencing rising orders from China due to the anti-dumping investigation by the US government. With anti-dumping duties ranging from 31-250%,China-based solar firms are reportedly seeking cooperation with Taiwan-based solar cell makers. Some Taiwan-based solar firms are concerned that the possible consequence of such cooperation may turn Taiwan's solar cell supply chain to be filled with OEM firms.
China-based solar firms are hoping to form solar module joint ventures with Taiwan-based firms to avoid being taxed by the US government. The benefit is that Taiwan-based solar firms may finally become competitive in the solar module segment. However, with China-based firms controlling distribution channels, the manufacturers in Taiwan are likely to become OEMs.
The cooperation may help both sides in the short-run,said industry sources, but Taiwan-based solar firms might lose their self-reliance.
