Peru's Ministry of Production, Promperu and the ACP Group have signed an agreement to jointly promote exports of cotton garments from Gamarra to Brazil. As per the agreement, the goal is to achieve textile and garment exports of US$ 100,000 in the first stage, wherein six micro and small enterprises (MSEs) from Gamarra commercial emporium have been selected to participate by the Ministry of Production based on several criteria. The agreement for the pilot project was signed be Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister Jose Luis Silva, Minister of Production Gladys Triveno and the ACP Group general manager Luis Ovalle. The Peruvian business group ACP is a leader in promoting the development of micro and small enterprises. The project includes providing the required support for increasing production and exports, to the six MSEs, including training, consulting, promotion and financing.
As per the agreement, the Ministry of Production would evaluate and select the companies that will benefit from the project. The Ministry would also provide training and technical assistance to the selected companies throughout the production process to ensure that the final product meant for export is according to the requirements of the Brazilian market. Promperu, the Commission for the Promotion of Peruvian Exports and Tourism, would be responsible for the commercial promotion of Peruvian products in Brazil. It would also manage, monitor and implement the project and maintain a database of potential customers in the Brazilian market. It will also support the beneficiary MSEs to monitor their export supply and guide them on export regulations for a period of four months. The ACP Group would be responsible for project management and provision of financial resources to cover the taxes and duties for entry in Brazilian market. It will also provide the material for promotion and sales of apparel, including catalogue, website, business cards, and samples. At present, Brazil imports US$ 102 million worth of textiles and apparel from Peru, and another US$ 340 million worth of clothing from Bangladesh, China and India. The Government of Peru aims to increase its textile and apparel exports to Brazil to US$ 300 million over the next three years.
