Infineon Is to Project Manage a Euros 34m Smart Grid Project

Infineon is to project manage a Euros 34m smart grid project called'Energy to Smart Grid(E2SG)aimed at reducing the power loss in energy distribution by 20%.

Infineon's partners in E2SG are:the Fraunhofer Institute,Insta Elektro NXP,RWTH Aachen University and Telefunken Semiconductors.

Out of E2SG's total budget of Euro 34m,the partners pay Euro 4.9m,while the BMBF(German Federal Ministry of Education and Research)is contributing Euro 4.4m,and the EC R&D initiative ENIAC is contributing Euro 1.9m.

According to the German Federal Environment Agency,Germans consume some 600TW hours of electric power per year.Today, approximately 25%of this energy is lost in transmission and transformation.

The German research partners are focusing on the smart meters and interfaces(voltage converters and communication technologies)connecting household appliances or lamps with the smart grid,in addition to energy-efficient interfaces.
