BMW M5 Sets New Drifting World Record

A BMW M5 now holds the Guinness World Record for the longest sustained drift after covering more than 82km sideways.

The record was set by BMW Performance Centre instructor Johan Schwartz in South Carolina, after he steered an unmodified 2013 BMW M5 for 322.5 laps of the driving school’s 256m (circumference) skid pad, for a total of 82.52km.

Equipped with the standard seven-speed automatic transmission and 255mm front and 295mm rear Continental tyres, the 412kW/680Nm BMW M5 smashed the previous 11.18km record set by Abdo Feghali in a Chevrolet Camaro SS in Abu Dhabi in February this year.

The record attempt was part of a BMW Charity Pro-Am event, and helped raise over $20,000 for more than 150 charities.
