IT Glitch That Caused Delays to Flight Across Southern England Has Been Fixed

The IT glitch that caused delays to flight across southern England today - especially into and out of the main London airports at Heathrow and Gatwick - has been fixed, claims NATS (formerly National Air Traffic Services), the UK's air navigation service provider.

It had publicly warned earlier today that the problems was causing delays to flights across the South of England after a glitch in its computer centre, based in Swanwick. UK airspace, it had stressed was not closed.

In a statement released within the hour, NATS claimed to have identified and cleared up the problem: "NATS has identified and corrected the technical problem that has been affecting air traffic control systems in the south of England.

"Operations are now returning to normal and we are working with the airports, airlines and Eurocontrol to clear the backlog of flights to ensure disruption is kept to a minimum.

"Outbound delays from the UK have generally been limited to 20 minutes.

"We regret any inconvenience this technical problem has caused, however our first priority will always be the safety of the flying public."
