Three Areas Could Provide The Footwear The Footwear Industry with Duty Relief

Footwear importers paid $2.5 billion in duties in 2012 ad the US imported billion pairs of shoes. Three areas could provide the footwear the footwear industry with duty relief.

The Affordable Footwear Act would reduce tariffs by approximately $617 million, according to the Footwear Distributors and Retailers of America, and the renawal of the Generalized Sysytem of Prefernces and passage of the miscellaneous tariff bill would also provide an unspecified amount of tariff relief.

Also, passage of the Trans-Pacific Partenership trade pact would have resulted in $364 million in duty savings in 2013, with all but $2 million of that total paid on footwear imported from Vietnam.
